i'm supposed to write this entry 2 days ago, but you know, im a busy, busy man (yea right) here goes
it was just another day's work at MINDEF and the guys asked me out for some supper at geylang the day before. well, due to my overwhelming popularity (laugh) and i've already rejected them a couple of times, it's only polite for me to agree. and so, took a cabbie down to geylang lorong 10, and the moment i stepped out the whole atmosphere felt kinda peculiar. i blindly walked around searching for them and it wasn't long until i reached this dark alley just beside one of those coffee shops. it immediately stunned me. men, lotsa men, just straying around, smoking, chatting, waiting for god-knows-what. i can't really translate that feeling into words, but the atmosphere is just, unnatural? depending on how you define it, and what kind of life you lead to be considered natural, lol
anyways, met up with the guys finally. ordered the heavenly (rumoured, by none other than the 3 of them that got me there) frog leg porridge, kung po style. i must say...8 bucks for a frog in kung po sauce? not quite worth it. first of all, i'm not all that impressed with the taste, the "springiness" as Theng puts it. and pulling the meat off the ribs of a frog? yeeew. if the frog tasted like beef and comes in portions weighing a couple of pounds then yea, i might fall in love with it. if not, i'd be more satisfied with a couple of swiss burgers or a sirloin steak.
after everything, we went around sightseeing. not exactly what i hoped for since, like i said, the atmosphere didn't feel quite right. not to mention i'm still in my naval uniform! and there's always the risk of some crazy bangla (no offense) pursuing us with a syringe, lol! not long after, dennis drove us back one by one. that's when the most interesting thing happened
i was at the back, kinda tired out after a day's work and all, and i didn't really participate or make the effort in doing so in their conversation. jer was dropped first. then somehow, fatefully or what, dennis didn't want to make a u-turn and head for my house, and he decided to drop theng at his camp. there was something about subaru competition, but i couldn't care more. i was just hoping to get home and tuck into my bed. it was at the turn from lim chu kang to cck avenue 3 when dennis pulled over at the red light, and the DJ on whatever that radio channel is announced the last 2 participants to be chosen for the subaru challenge. dennis started dialling, while i kindly remind him he's still behind the wheel. the green light came on, and he made a casual remark that why didn't i help call in. very obviously because i didn't have the number, duh. and so, since he's driving me home, the least i could do was to help him with my phone. "sorry, the line you have dialled is engaged at the moment" this went on for the next km or so when suddely, just at the traffic light before the bus stop i'll be alighting, there was a dial tone. it had been 5 mins since the DJ made the announcement, and by now i thought the last 2 participants would have been chosen. but who knows? and no harm waiting since it's not gonna cost me a penny, and that's when someone picked up the phone. it was the DJ, and she asked for my age, etc, and dennis pulled over beside my bus stop. i gave her dennis' details, and i can sense that he's excited, lol! while i was on the phone, i'd to remind him of the incoming bus as his car is blocking its way, and he drove into a street with his hazard lights still turned on, lol! i just passed my phone to him when he stopped his car, and things just went on. yup, he qualified for the competition, the last one to be selected, if i'm not wrong, lol!
i dunno if it's his luck or mine, or maybe jer's (right... haha!) but yea, congrats dennis! with your physique i guess the competition will be a breeze for you. anyway, treat this as an early birthday present from me la!
